In 1996, physicist Alan Sokal suspected that cultural studies lacked academic rigor. So he wrote an intentionally nonsensical paper, Transgressing the Boundaries: Towards a Transformative Hermeneutics of Quantum Gravity, and submitted it for publication in the respected academic journal Social Text. It was accepted.

Major national funders of scientific research announced that by 2020 they'll stop financing studies published behind paywalls. The open-initiative proposal, known as Plan-S, could dramatically alter how peer-reviewed articles are published. Under the plan,11 national research funders, including UK Research and Innovation, will require scientists who accept their public grants to publish their work in open-access platforms. The plan would exclude roughly 85 percent of peer-reviewed journals that, as of 2017, charge a fee to users to access studies (Universities UK). Plan-S has sparked backlash from scientific publishing companies, which largely support the subscription model.

Eight out of the top 10 universities that offer blockchain courses are based in the US, according to a new report compiled by popular cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase. The research has more broadly uncovered that 42 percent of the world’s top universities offer at least one academically endorsed course. Leading the way is Stanford which offers 10 blockchain-based courses. Cornell University, and the University of Pennsylvania take up second and third place by offering nine and six blockchain courses, respectively.
